Microsoft FY27 for partners

By Marie ScultoreLast updated: 6 min read

Microsoft's fiscal year 2027 runs from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. The change that matters most is co-sell, which now goes through Microsoft Marketplace first. Microsoft also added a Frontier Partner specialization for AI and agent work, and aimed its co-op guidance at demand generation and Copilot.

What are Microsoft's solution areas in FY27?

The frame didn't move this year. In July 2025, for FY26, Microsoft folded six solution areas into three commercial ones.4 AI Business Solutions combines Business Applications and Modern Work. Cloud & AI Platforms combines Data & AI, Digital & App Innovation and Infrastructure. Security stays on its own.4

Microsoft's FY27 announcements still use those names for its Solutions Partner designations.2 Some older names survive as solution paths inside a designation, such as the Modern Work path to the AI Business Solutions designation.3

When you describe your practice to Microsoft, lead with the solution area name, then the path.

What is the Frontier Partner specialization?

Microsoft announced it at MCAPS Start for Partners, where it presented its FY27 partner investments. Microsoft calls it a premier distinction, earned by partners who show expertise in the design, security and scale of enterprise-grade AI and agentic solutions.1

It brings together advanced skilling, multiple specializations and proven delivery.1 The announcement gives no thresholds, so check Partner Center before you build a campaign around it.

Specializations moved around it. Microsoft lists new and expanded ones in Agentic Business Solutions, Agentic Security and Digital Sovereignty, plus a Clinical Applications specialization for healthcare partners.1 It retired the Adoption and Change Management specialization on June 25, 2026, and announced specialization mergers for early August 2026, with new performance and skilling criteria.2

How does co-sell work in FY27?

This is the change I'd act on first. In a July note on Azure IP co-sell, written for software development companies, Microsoft says that in FY27 Marketplace becomes the primary path for co-sell at scale.2

The old partner-reported model, Partner Reported Azure Consumed Revenue, no longer operates as a broad co-sell mechanism in FY27. Co-sell credit for Marketplace transactions is still recognized through Marketplace Billed Sales.2 Microsoft's advice: if you already transact through Marketplace, keep scaling. If something blocks you, work on it with your Partner Development Manager.2

The marketplace itself is recent. Microsoft unified Azure Marketplace and AppSource into Microsoft Marketplace in September 2025, starting in the US.5 For software companies, Frontier Accelerate for Marketplace, announced for September 2026, combines ISV Success, Marketplace Rewards, Azure IP co-sell and certified software designations. Existing partners move to it at renewal.2

Microsoft's argument for co-sell comes from its own analysis: when partners and Microsoft sellers co-sell, it reports 84 percent higher win rates.1 Your listing now does part of the selling to those sellers. More on that in selling on the cloud.

What does Microsoft want co-op funds spent on?

Microsoft's FY27 guidance shapes co-op around demand generation and high-yield activities, and directs 30 percent of co-op investment toward Copilot. It also asks partners to use propensity signals to target customers.1

Distributors get a new Reseller Activation category, for partner-led demand generation.1

Before you submit a plan, compare the share you put on Copilot with that 30 percent, and know why if you're under it. Then mind the calendar. Co-op funds have claim windows, so confirm yours with your Microsoft contact before you plan the quarter.

Incentives shifted mid-year too. From October 1, 2026, Microsoft changed how FY27 partner investments are targeted. It says the total commitment is unchanged, and claims submitted on or before September 30, 2026 are assessed on the prior terms.3

What should a Microsoft partner do now?

  • Check your anniversary date. From early 2027, renewal opens 30 days before it, and the grace period after it ends.2
  • If you sell software, make Marketplace your first route. That's where co-sell credit is recognized now.2
  • Rewrite your practice description with the three solution area names.
  • Line up your co-op plan with the demand generation and Copilot guidance.1
  • Book your Ignite meetings early. Ignite runs November 17 to 20, 2026.1
