I know how AWS selects the partners they prefer to work with.
Six years as an AWS consultant, as Partner Marketing Lead for Canada, then marketing leadership inside a Premier tier partner. I know which partners AWS sellers call first, and what it takes to become one of them. From Select tier up.
Six years on the AWS side.
From 2020 to the end of 2025, I worked as an AWS consultant in partner marketing for Canada, as virtual Partner Marketing Manager inside their scalable programs team. I sat between AWS teams and the partners they sell with: ISV collaborations, campaigns, events, funding, co-branding, and the proof AWS asks for. I managed the marketing portion for about 40 Canadian SI partners.
Then I moved inside an AWS partner and carried its targets. I know what AWS needs from a partner, and what a partner needs from AWS.
Why some partners get the call and others wait.
- AWS sellers bring in the partners they already know. A clear story, public proof and a clean deal record are how you get known.
- Most partners at Select have nobody at AWS doing their marketing. They do it themselves, or it doesn't happen.
- Funding goes unspent more often than partners admit. A plan written before the year starts is what gets it spent and executed.
- Badges get you on the shortlist. Customers then pick on delivery, on people, and on who they trust the most to deliver the work.
My four steps, on the mountain.
| Step | Camp | Time | You'll know it worked when |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. I get the assumption | Base camp: the Diagnostic | About 2 weeks | The readout is done and your route agreed |
| 2. I build the plan | Camp 1: Plan | The first 30 days | Every place AWS reads about you tells one story |
| 3. I review | End of Camp 1, with your AWS team | Inside the first 30 days | Your AWS team has the plan |
| 4. I execute | Camp 2 Launch, Camp 3 Climb, Summit | Days 31 to 90, then every quarter | AWS accepts your opportunities, then takes your pipeline seriously at every review |
- Just need the plan?
- The Plan sprint: two weeks, your joint marketing plan with AWS and your funding requests. Evaluation of last year's activities needed first.
- Terms
- The Diagnostic has a fixed scope, and its fee counts toward the Foundation if you start within 30 days. Campaign work starts with the 90-day Foundation. Then a monthly retainer, renewed each quarter, 30 days' notice.
Built for the way AWS works now.
Funding: MDF and SCA
I turn funding into campaigns that bring opportunities, file the requests on time and build the proof for the claim. If needed, I can track your MDF requests and submit them on your behalf.
- What you hold or qualify for, and what it should buy.
- Each activity planned so it can be funded under the current APN rules.
- Your PDM sees it before it's filed, if you have one.
- Then the activities run and the claim goes in on time, with its proof of costs.
You'll know it worked when the claim is in and the activity brought opportunities.
AWS seller session or roundtable
Teach an AWS account team when to bring you in, or gather a small room of buyers with an AWS leader.
- The AWS team that should know you and the deals you want from them.
- The session, the one-pager sellers keep, the referral path.
- A rehearsal with your team, and the agenda to your AWS contact first.
- Then the session, follow-up within 48 hours, referrals tracked in ACE.
You'll know it worked when seller referrals turn into Account Originated opportunities.
AWS Summit or re:Invent program
Meetings booked before the doors open, leads followed up after.
- The accounts and AWS people worth the trip.
- Sessions, receptions, meeting requests through your PDM, a booth only if it pays.
- The meeting list and budget signed off before you book travel.
- Then I follow up within 48 hours to understand what came out of it.
You'll know it worked when the meetings and events become opportunities in ACE.
Case study, written or video
From interviews to customer approval, written for AWS review.
- The customer story that proves what you want AWS sellers to sell.
- Interviews, angle, format and who is requested to speak on each side.
- Your customer approves first through a Marketing Authorization Form as per AWS guidelines.
- My first goal is to get it published on aws.com, so I make sure we follow AWS requirements on the topic, the format and the agencies we use before we start planning.
You'll know it worked when your sellers and AWS sellers both use it.
AWS Marketplace listing and profile
A listing and a Partner Solutions Finder profile that say the same thing as your deal records.
- The words AWS sellers and buyers should find you with.
- The listing, the profile and your deal record fields rewritten to one story.
- Your sales and alliance leads check every claim against your APN status.
- Published and reviewed every quarter.
You'll know it worked when every place AWS reads about you tells the same story.
Co-sell records
ACE records that give AWS a reason to work the deal with you.
- Your five biggest open deals, and what you need from AWS on each.
- The six checks from my Opportunity Quality Score guide on every record.
- Your sales team confirms each customer problem in the customer's own words.
- Then the records are updated and watched for 30 days.
You'll know it worked when AWS sellers start working those deals with you.
Also for AWS partners: Quebec French adaptation, executive ghostwriting, single events, SWAG and paid ads. Quoted per item.
Built for partners from Select tier up.
AWS partners
Consulting partners, software partners and managed service providers, most of them without a dedicated marketing person at AWS.
Funding not converting
Partners holding MDF or a Strategic Collaboration Agreement they haven't turned into campaigns yet.
Partners focused on growth
Partners ready to expand their go-to-market motions and go after new growth.
You're not at Select.
You need technical foundations first: accredited people, certifications and launched deals. I'll introduce you to a partner who builds them, and we'll talk when you're on the mountain.
Doesn't AWS already help with this?
Yes, and it's a good place to start. AWS Partner Marketing gives you the programs. I don't replace it. I turn those programs into campaigns and pipeline inside your business.
- Ready-made campaigns and co-branded assets
- Funding for approved activities, once you qualify
- Training, guidance and best practices
- Programs that reward the partners who use them
- A plan written for your business and your AWS team
- Campaigns and events run with your people, from invites to follow-up
- Every lead followed until it reaches a decision
- The proof AWS looks for: case studies, complete deal records, pipeline
Checked every week, explained in one line.
Your plan never leaves your company.
My clients can compete with each other, so every engagement is sealed. No lead list, plan or tactic moves from one client to another, and I never go after the same industry or accounts for two clients at once. I don't publish client results. You decide what goes public.
Start with a Diagnostic.
Two weeks to see your AWS marketing the way AWS sees it. You leave with your route, whether we climb together or not.
